CHEM 221 - Organic Chemistry I Credits: 4 When Offered: Fall Prerequisite(s): CHEM 152 with a grade of “C” or higher.
This course introduces the nomenclature, functional groups and chemical reactivities of various classes of organic compounds. Students study the relationships between molecular structure and the chemical and physical properties of organic compounds. The laboratory component of the course provides students with an opportunity to learn important techniques for synthesizing, isolating, purifying and characterizing organic compounds. Three lectures and one three-hour laboratory per week.
Note: First semester of a two-semester sequence. This course is a prerequisite to that of the second semester course. Credit may be received for the work of this course without the completion of the second.
