RECEIVING FINANCIAL AID

Washington Adventist University assists students and families with identifying resources to help finance a university education. A family’s ability to pay is based on the following assumptions:

  • Students and parents have the primary responsibility to pay for the cost of a WAU education.
  • A family’s current financial condition will determine the amount of financial assistance they can receive.
  • Families will be evaluated consistently and equitably, recognizing that exceptional circumstances can alter the ability to contribute to their student’s education.

To be considered for federal and institutional need and merit-based aid, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The form is available on October 1 of each year and can be found online at studentaid.gov. The application process is free.

Students who choose not to complete the FAFSA will only receive academic scholarships, if eligible. Students must submit their online or paper FAFSA to the Department of Education by January 1 of the calendar year in which they wish to attend WAU to receive the best financial aid package. Maryland residents who wish to be considered for Maryland state grants must complete the FAFSA form by March 1.

After all financial aid information is complete and accurate and all required documentation has been received, the Financial Aid Office will process the data and send the student an Offer Notification (formerly known as an award letter). The Offer Notification lists the complement of available grants, loans, and institutional scholarships.

Typical financial aid awarded to students:

  • Grants - Grants do not need to be repaid.
  • Scholarships - Scholarships do not need to be repaid. The award may have certain qualifying restrictions such as grade-point average (GPA) or test scores.
  • Student loans - Loans must be repaid after the student leaves school for any reason or drops below half-time status.
