PROCEDURES FOR ASSESSING CREDIT, NEED FOR NEW COURSES/PROGRAMS, CURRICULUM AND ACADEMIC POLICY CHANGES

The Curriculum Committee serves as a subset of the university’s Academic Council, and is the first place a department will present a request for assessing credit, a need for new course/program, curricular changes, or any academic policy changes.

The committee is tasked to review the request and determine if amendments are needed prior to obtaining final recommended approvals. For course/ program and curriculum changes, the committee shall review credit allotment, course objectives/definitions, course assessment measures, and if the recommended changes are deemed appropriate.

For policy changes, the committee shall discuss and determine if a change is warranted. Upon obtaining recommended approval from the curriculum committee, the request is forwarded to Academic Council for their recommended approval before being brought up to the entire faculty senate to discuss and vote for approval.

Below determines the functions of the Curriculum Committee:

  1. Reviews the effectiveness of the general education curriculum of the university as expressed in the annual assessment report.
  2. Recommends changes to WAU’s “statement of objectives” and ensures programs are aligned to the university’s mission.
  3. Studies and reviews submissions to the Committee from academic departments for new program proposal, new course proposal, course additions, deletions, or modifications to the existing curriculum.
  4. Studies and reviews curricular issues referred from Academic Council such as program alignment, program growth, program status, and general education curriculum.

Note: You may refer to the university’s Terms of Reference for future definitions and functions of all standing committees and its membership.
