ATTENDANCE POLICY

Regular and punctual attendance at all classes and laboratories is required.  Missing instruction for any reason may lower the class grade or otherwise adversely affect a student’s standing in class, as stated in the instructor’s syllabus.  A student is expected to attend at least 80% of class instruction during an academic session or semester.

Attends one or more classes and stops attending:

  • Stops attending prior to the first day to withdrawal from classes without jeopardizing financial aid (see ACADEMIC CALENDAR  for specific date): A student who has been absent or not engaged in class by submitting assignments, etc. for more than 20 calendar days (not class instruction days) will be withdrawn from their course(s) and given a “WA” grade.  Once a “WA” grade has been submitted the student will not be allowed to return to class and the “WA” grade will not be changed.
  • Has not attended at least 80 percent of class instruction during a term: A student who stops attending class instruction, during an academic session or semester, may be withdrawn for lack of attendance, by the instructor, and receive a grade of “WA” for the course.
If a student has not attended at least 80% of class instruction and their last date of attendance is after the first day to withdrawal from classes without jeopardizing financial aid the instructor can withdrawal the student only up until the last day to withdraw from classes (typically two weeks before a term ends).  Otherwise, the grade submitted must be what the student earned over the length of the term.
“WA” grades will not be accepted after the last day to withdraw from a class.  Once a “WA” grade has been submitted the student will not be allowed to return to class and the “WA” grade will not be changed.  See ACADEMIC CALENDAR  for specific dates.

In either case, the instructor must also indicate the last day of attendance/ engagement (can be either the last date a student physically attended class or the last date a student submitted an assignment or took and exam/quiz.  Whichever is the latest date will be considered the last date of attendance).  The instructor must submit this grade within the semester in which the student was registered for the course.

Never attended a class:

If a student has never attended a class the instructor must submit an “AW” grade by the designated deadline following the last day to add/drop a class without receiving a “W.”  See ACADEMIC CALENDAR .
