A MESSAGE FROM THE VICE PRESIDENT FOR THE CENTER OF STUDENT LIFE


Dear Student:

Welcome to Washington Adventist University.  Thank you for selecting WAU as the institution of higher education that will support you as you pursue your personal and career goals.  The entire learning community is dedicated and committed to your success.  Washington Adventist University is a private university with a liberal arts tradition, offering a dynamic blend of professional and liberal arts undergraduate and graduate programs.  Founded in scenic Takoma Park in 1904, it is owned by the Seventh-day Adventist Church and offers a Christian education to students of differing faiths from around the world.  Its vision is to produce graduates who bring competence and moral leadership to their communities.  This Student Handbook will serve as a reference to opportunities, policies, regulations, and events available at WAU.  It is designed for easy reference.  Starting with the section “Washington Adventist University from A to Z,” you will find major topics listed in alphabetical order.  You are expected to read and comply with the contents of this handbook and to be thoroughly familiar with its contents.  You have the responsibility to know and follow the rules and regulations herein.  “Every reasonable effort has been made to present factually accurate information. However, the provisions of this [Student Handbook] are not to be regarded as an irrevocable contract between the university and the student.”

Washington Adventist University provides a wide variety of services, programs, and activities that are designed to help make the most of your educational opportunities, both within and outside of the classroom. Services provided include:

  • Educational and personal counseling
  • Academic advising
  • Study skills and tutoring
  • Financial aid
  • Intramural athletic programs
  • Spiritual nurture
  • Social and cultural events
  • University sponsored residential living and a campus dining hall
  • Involvement with the Student Association (SA) and other student organizations

Take the initiative and become involved in campus life.  You will discover that you will make lifelong friends and expand your personal educational experience as you participate and contribute to the overall quality of student life here at WAU.  Make good decisions, ask questions, and stay focused on your academic goals.  You are valued and we will do all we can to support, guide, and nourish your intellectual growth, your physical development, and your relationship with God and humanity.
